What is Reining?Reining is a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a ranch type horse within the confines of a show arena. In National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Competition, contestants are required to run a pre-selected, approved pattern, included in the NRHA Handbook. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360-degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse. The NRHA Judging System is recognized as the leading format for judging an equine event that combines technical and stylistic elements coupled with consideration of "degree of difficulty." Many segments of the equine judging discipline have openly embraced the NRHA Judging System. For more information on Reining, go to NRHA.com

FROM A JUDGE'S PERSPECTIVE ....
Chef d’Equipe of the U.S. WEG Gold Medal Reining Team Jeff Petska from Whitesboro, Texas has judged Reining By The Bay three times, and found the competition to be exceptional “The horses are well cared for, the ground is good, the show is run well, everybody’s in a good mood, and it’s just a great show to come to”. Petska said all of the judges were suffering from “horse envy” after seeing the depth of talent in the Open Derby “Not only the runs, but the quality of the horses is probably the most impressive. As a judge you like to see good runs, but there were a number of horses here that you could take anywhere in the world, at any Reining event and they would be in the top 5 or maybe even win it. There were a couple of horses that weren’t even showing in the Open that were exceptional horses, and that’s a neat thing to see."
One of the best things about the event is its proximity to so many wonderful area attractions, restaurants, and hotels. The Horse Park at Woodside is a stone's throw from Stanford University and all that the town of Palo Alto has to offer. A short 30 minute drive and you can find yourself in the amazing city of San Francisco or tech capital of the world, Silicon Valley. Travel 30 minutes west over the beautiful mountain peninsula of redwood tree forest to the coast town of Half Moon Bay and find yourself on white sand beaches eating some of the best seafood in the world while watching the surfers challenge the waves on San Mateo County's best beaches. There is no shortage of things to do while attending the Reining by the Bay, whether is watching world class horses compete for over $250,000 in cash and prizes or taking in the sites of the incredible San Francisco bay area.
The Reining By The Bay schedule allows exhibitors and trainers time to venture out and do things they don’t have the luxury of doing at other events. In 2012, Tish Fappani checked riding an American Saddlebred off her bucket list, while her son Jeremy not only drove a Hackney pony, but also rode a second pony in an English saddle and posted for the first time. Thanks to Markel’s Frank Costantini, Deary Performance Horses, Yancey Performance Horses and Warwick Schiller, 5 high-profile English riders were able to ride a Reiner for the first time. This event is definitely on many people top events to attend, so don't miss out and join us to celebrate another year of amazing fun in the sun.
